Athanasius

Athanasius
(c. 296–373)
   Saint, Bishop and Theologian.
Athanasius attended the Council of Nicaea as the secretary of the Bishop of Alexandria. He was consecrated as Bishop of Alexandria in 328, but he was driven into exile in 336 because of his opposition to the doctrines of arius. He was the author of a series of theological works including the wellknown De Incarnatione, and he presided over the Council of Alexandria in 362 which reconciled many semi-Arians to orthodoxy. He also resisted other heresies. Although he was a personal friend of apollinarius, he did not hesitate to condemn his teachings which denied the full humanity of Jesus Christ. He also opposed the doctrines of the disciples of macedonius who denied the full divinity of the Holy Spirit. A supporter of monasticism, he wrote a biography of St antony of egypt. None the less, he is chiefly remembered for his implacable opposition to Arianism. He did not live to see the final triumph of his views at the Council of Constantinople in 381 when Apollinarianism was condemned and the Nicene doctrine of the Person of Christ upheld.
